N.Z. debaters pipped by Aust.

PA Wellington The New Zealand debating team was pipped at the post in the final of the three test series against the Australian national team in Melbourne. This meant New Zealand had failed in its bid to recapture the Sir Walter Norwood Trophy from the Australians, the team captain, John Bishop, of Wellington, said. The New Zealanders went into the third test all square having won the first test and lost the second test, both held in Adelaide. In the final, New Zealand affirmed the motion that “Sam should no longer be our Uncle” in front of an audience of

200 people. The debate was held in the Legislative Council Chamber of the Victorian State Parliament with the Speaker of the Victorian Upper House presiding. The final debate also marked the start of the Australian national debating championships. In an earlier debate, held at Pentridge prison in Melbourne, a large audience of inmates unanimously supported New Zealand who affirmed the motion that “corruption is the norm,” against the Victorian state team, Mr Bishop said. The New Zealand team will return home with a three-win, three-loss record from its six-match tour.
