Selwyn River rating meeting

The draft reclassification of the Selwyn River rating district will be discussed at a meeting in the Dunsandel Hall at 8 p.m. today.

The meeting is to inform ratepayers and in-

vite submissions before the North Canterbury Catchment Board adopts the draft classification for rating from next April 1. The review which has now been done is in line with the board’s policy for the Selwyn River. This is

to maintain the stopbanks and a cleared river fairway to a uniform standard from the Hororata River to Lake Ellesmere

and to promote erosion control works and tree planting.

The board believes classification of properties into benefit classes is the most equitable means by which it can strike differential rates and the most equitable basis for classification is capital value.
