Bid to ban breed

Sir,—Recently I spent an afternoon with a family of American pit bull terriers. I found them to be calm, amiable and very well disciplined. My children played with them and I felt perfectly confident with regard to the children’s safety. Any call to ban this breed on the strength of their reputation overseas is narrow-minded and typical of the bigotry rife in this country at present. Recent statistics show the seemingly innocuous cocker spaniel to be the breed most commonly involved in attacks on humans. Perhaps a petition to have them banned would be appropriate. God save us from opinionated people who make uneducated guesses and let us hope common sense will prevail over this unmitigated foolishness. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) MELANIE DALTON. August 7, 1989.
