Ban on fires

Sir,—Patrick Neary (August 3) overlooked the basic contention of my letter, which was that we should beware of selective legislation against Christchurch as proposed by the deputy leader. We do not hear the members for Remuera or Mangere proposing such a ban for Christchurch. If a ban in the name of air pollution is valid then, as this occurs everywhere, then make it New Zealand-wide, not just applied to Christchurch because the proposer lives here. I wonder what reaction there would be if one of our local politicians decided to no longer accept the fouling of pavements and beaches and proceeded with a bill to ban all dogs from Christchurch? Incidentally, any air pollution regulations are doomed anyway by the farce of the proliferation of approved clean-air, solid-fuel appliances that seem only to meet the requirements under ideal conditions of fuel and tending, unlikely to be reproduced on the average in the private home, as can readily be seen by observing the emissions from these identifiable chimneys whose growth is quite noticeable. —Yours, etc., G. D. STAIRMAND. August 7, 1989.
