Watersiders warned

PA Wellington An employers advocate, Mr John Button, has told watersiders to think long and hard before striking. Mr Button said there was a will throughout the country for port reform and teamwork would be better than confrontation. The union gave 14 days notice of strike action on Thursday and leaders met on Friday to discuss strategy, including the possibility of a national stoppage. Representatives will report back to their branches today, after which the

recommendations from the meeting will be made public. The strike notice expires on August 22 and the union has warned the dispute could escalate to 1951 proportions. Watersiders are resisting a push by employers for separate port agreements, which employers claim are needed to change waterfront procedures. From October 1, the general principle order which sets out working conditions for watersiders will cease to exist as a result of the Waterfront Industry Reform Act.
