Big run expected from Dillon Dean in Kurow Cup

Dillon Dean, one of three pacers representing North Island stables, is favoured to start his five-year-old campaign on a winning note in the $15,000 Kurow Cup at the Oamaru Raceway today.

Although down to 10 runers with the scratchings of Frangelico and Sir Alba, this year’s field is again a quality line-up with Dillon Dean and Race Ruler both being former New Zealand Derby winners, while Race Ruler and Laser Lad are former Great Northern Derby winners engaged. Dillon Dean, the "Three-Year-Old Pacer of the Year” in 1988 and the "Four-Year-Old Pacer of the Year” in the season just concluded, had a troublesome time with viruses last season but still managed to win the feature race for his age group, the N.Z. Messenger in race record time. The Takanini-trained pacer raced creditably in open class at the end of last season, flashing home for third in Luxury Liner’s Inter-Island Stakes and finishing second to Laser Lad in the Group Two Cadbury Schweppes Hudson Handicap at Alexandra Park. Dillon Dean’s co-owner, Don Dwyer, who has his former stable foreman, Lawrence Barnes, as a training partner this season, reports his star to be in "tremendous” order and a big run is expected. The son of Shicker and Birdie has been twice to the Pukekohe Sunday workouts in preparation for today’s race. He beat today’s race rivals, Race Ruler and Gaelic Skipper, over 2600 metres in 3:33 three weeks ago, running his last 2400 m in 3:8 and final 800 m in 60 seconds “on the steel,” and was second to Elmer Gantry with Race Ruler third in 3:30 (last 800 m in 59) eight days ago. the Inter-Island Stakes at Auckland in April, has been trialing well for trainer Jack Smolenski in recent weeks and will not lack on the score of fitness or horsemanship today. Race Ruler, now trained by Owen Purdon, has not raced since last November but has been back in work for some time. Anything he does today he should improve on but at the same time he must be respected in this, with regular driver Maurice McKendry coming south to drive him. Debbie’s Boy, assessed at CB, is meeting most of his rivals on unfavourable terms under these CB-OC Free-For-All conditions, but has been in fine form at the trials and would not surprise by getting some of the money. The Southlander comfortably disposed of the capable Canterbury pacer, Nugent Lopez, on two occasions at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting and looks capable of footing it with these better-performed runners today. Cardinal Star, the winner of his last three on end in Canterbury at the tail of last term, has been to the fore at the trials, along with Final Offer, giving the field plenty of scope over all. Gaelic Skipper, now an eight-year-old, is a former Auckland Cup runer-up (to Luxury Liner in 1987), but like Race Ruler has been off the scene since last November with injury problems. Metro Boy, which has not raced since failing on this day last year, is likely to make a bold return to racing in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the FTCBig Softie Handicap for C 3 pacers.
