INDOOR CRICKET INDOOW BOWLS

Howzat won the Air New Zealand indoor cricket men’s title when it recorded an exciting one run win over Sockbum on Saturday. Russley had a comfortable win over Sockbum in the women’s final. Sockburn batted first and reached 90 after 12 overs before three quick wickets to Julian Marsh reduced the score by 10. The last pair struggled to overcome some tight bowling and fielding and could only add four runs, Sockburn totalling 94. Howzat batted well to reach 84 after 12 overs and careful play by Steve Booth and Ross Paterson saw it pass the target in the penultimate over. The pair played out the last over safely for a well judged victory. Results.— WOMEN A grade: Russley 165 (K. Withers and N. Turner 38, S. Illingworth and M. Russell 43, J. Russell and J. Eight Canterbury representative indoor bowlers successfully defended the Williamson Trophy when they played North Otago at the Kaiapoi Working Men's Club on Saturday. This annual match is played for on a home-and-away basis, with one of the conditions set by the donor being that no Canterbury player may play in the event more than once. The format is the same as for the A. S. Paterson games, with two rounds of fours, singles and pairs. The Canterbury, team was captained by Trevor Austin (Garden City) as skip of one four.

As with Bill Trembath in last week’s Jackson Trophy, Trevor, although a past A. S. Paterson player and Welsh Trophy winner, has never represented Canterbury in this event.

The other fours’ skip was Michael Gibb (Springfield) who has a national fours title to his credit, and is also the Canterbury singles champion.

Both teams started well, and after some tight bowling reached the half way mark having halved the fours, Canterbury winning six of the eight singles, and again halving -the pairs bringing the first round score to Canterbury 18, North Otago 10. Canterbury’s superiority reigned throughout the second round. It won both fours, five singles and three of the four pairs for a final tally and a conclusive win of 37 points to 19.
