High jump ‘record’
NZPA-Reuter New York A Puerto Rican athletics official said yesterday he was confident Cuban Javier Sotomayor’s high jump of 2.44 metres, or eight feet, would be certified as a world record. But the official, Amadeo Francis, said he would have to wait until today to receive all the forms he has to fill out because “I never expected to have to certify a world record in Puerto Rico.” Sotomayor, aged 21, broke his own previous record of 2.43 metres, set in Salamanca, Spain last September, just days before the Seoul Olympics which he was unable to attend because of the Cuban boycott
