Waipara cycling

A big field of 89 riders will start the 90km Waipara Classic handicap cycling race tomorrow. The race, which combines some relatively hilly segments, is regarded as one of the more difficult road races of the Canterbury calendar. Nine handicap marks make up the distance between the scratch riders, and those on front, at 35rnin. No doubt, with the addition of Woolston’s Brian Fowler in the scratch bunch, the pace will be livelier than in some previous events this season. Fowler returned from 11 weeks racing with a team in Canada last Sunday. It is his first road race in New Zealand for three months. Other scratch markers with Fowler are Carl Crowe, lan Dickie, Nigel Donnelly, Stuart Mills, Jason M. Smith, Stuart Lowe, Darrell Kircher and Carlos Marryatt. The course starts at the Waipara turn-off to Hanmer Springs at 12 noon, heads to Waikari, past Hawarden and back to Waikari. Riders then turn to Scargill and back to Highway No. 1 before finishing back at Waipara.
