Thomas wins

Lyall Thomas brought off an upset by winning the boys’ scratch section of the junior ten-pin bowling tournament at the Garden City Bowl.

Thomas’s score of 642 over four games was matched by the girls’ scratch winner, Leah Whatarangi. They averaged 160.5 a game. A close , second place-getter in the girls’ contest, Tina Counsell, finished at the head of the handicap field, and Alan Hancox won the boys’ handicap.

The bantam section for bowlers 13 and under was won by Ashley Tomlins with a good score of 839 (average 152.72), which would have gained him third place in the scratch section. This was an excellent four-game effort for a 12-year-old. Sarah O’Hagan bowled well

to finish second to Tomlins in the bantam section.
