Maori interest ‘welcomed’

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington Approaches by Maoris to buy the Tourist Hotel Corporation have been welcomed by the Opposition spokesman on Maori affairs, Mr Winston Peters. He gave his support to the proposal by Sir Graham Latimer, chair-

man of the Maori Council, for a united Maori approach to buying the T.H.C. If Maoridom could find the money and, in association with the Maori Development Corporation, buy the T.H.C., then that would be a boost for Maoridom and the country, Mr Peters said.

The T.H.C. should be kept in New Zealand hands and the Maori Council proposal was the only one in sight that offered that option, he said. Mr Peters opposed selling the T.H.C. to foreign interests. The Government’s asset sale programme seemed intent on

making all New Zealanders vassals of some foreign power, he said. A Maori initiative could stop that rot. Maoridom had the resources, if they were pooled to buy the T.H.C., to offer jobs and training to young Maoris in the hospitality industry and keep a unique part of New Zealand’s heritage under its control.
