Taste Awards won by 61 S.I. restaurants

Sixty-one South Island restaurants have won Taste New Zealand Awards which were presented at a number of regional ceremonies. A total of 158 restaurants from Northland to Invercargill have won the awards, the Minister of Tourism, Mr Hunt, said. “More than three times as many restaurants applied for a Taste New Zealand Award this year than in the inaugural year of 1988,” he said. Quality assurance was now the main focus of the award which is a seal of quality, not a competition, for restaurants featuring cuisine that is distinc-

tively New Zealand. The award scheme is administered by the New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Department and the New Zealand Food and Beverage Exporters’ Council. “A particularly encouraging development was increasingly high standards in the regions, where many of the assessed restaurants provide very good value for money,” Mr Hunt said. This year, for the first time, honorary Taste New Zealand Awards were given to some restaurants within catering departments of polytechnics and technical institutes and also to Bellamys at Parlia-

ment. In the South Island, awards were won by 12 restaurants in Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast; 20 in Canterbury and Aorangi and 29 in Southland, Central Otago, coastal and North Otago.
