Elderly woman assaulted with knife

A youth, aged 14, held a knife towards a 78-year-old woman, intending to rob her, and told a younger companion to throw stones at her, the Children and Young Persons Court heard yesterday.

The youth pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting the woman, when armed with a knife, with intent to rob her, at New Brighton, at 2.40 p.m., on July 13. Judge Frampton remanded him to August 18 for a social worker’s report and sentence.

He was released into his parents’ custody during the remand period, with a condition that he observe a nightly curfew, remaining at home from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. unless accompanied by his parents. He was represented by Mr Allister Davis.

Sergeant Kevin Morrison said that as the woman walked along Shaw Avenue the defendant appeared from behind a bush bordering Rawhiti Golf Course. He held out a knife 15cm long in front of him, and stood very close to the woman. He had a jersey on his head nearly covering his whole face, to conceal his appearance.

The defendant told the woman to give him her bag, and then told his companion, aged 12, who stood, behind the woman, to throw stones at her. The woman had not known anybody was behind her. She turned and felt several stones, thrown by the younger boy, hit her.

The woman swung a plastic bag containing books at the boy who

threw the stones, but as she did so the defendant grabbed her from behind and threw her to the ground.

The two boys then ran off across the golf course leaving the woman lying on the footpath. She suffered a blow to her head from her fall, and also complained of sore legs. She was treated by a doctor.

Neither boy, when questioned, gave any reason for the attack, but the defendant later said he needed money to leave Christchurch, but that it was a stupid thing to do. Sergeant Morrison said the younger boy had been dealt with by the police by way of a complaint action under the Children and Young Persons Act.

The defendant had no previous Court convictions.
