Ski-field report
South Island ski-field conditions as reported to the New Zealand Snow Centre yesterday were (all facilities oper- , ating unless stated):— Treble Cone: Base 20 to 40cm; last fall 10 to 15cm July 18. Cardrona: Base 40cm; packed powder on groomed trails. Nordic Ski Area: 20km groomed trails. Harris Mountains Heliski: One metre base; powder on firm base; operating subject to weather. Mount Lyford: Base 65cm; packed powder snow over whole mountain; chains to be fitted. Ohau: Base 32cm; last fall 6cm July 17; reopening today; chains required. Mount Dobson: Packed powder on all the main runs; chains required. Tekapo: Base 25cm; packed powder, main trails groomed; chairlift operating; platter lift subject to conditions; open week-ends until mid-August; no road toll. The Remarkables: Base. 45cm upper, 40cm lower; groomed and packed powder; ski-ing in main trails; Alta, Sugar bowl. Shadow basin and beginners’ lift operating;
chains carried. Mount Olympus: Base 50cm, 20cm dry powder on top; opening this week-end; chains required. Broken River. 60cm base; good cover over whole mountain; goods lift from 9.30 a.m.; chains to be fitted. Temple Basin: 60cm upper, 20cm lower; packed powder, goods lift 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Porter Heights: Some rocky patches. Mount Hutt: 70cm base, last fall 30cm July 19/20; packed powder; main runs groomed and vibrotilled; chains to be fitted. Mount Cheeseman: Rocks showing on T-bar runs; chains required. Craigieburn: 35cm base; three rope tows and one learners’ tow operating; all trails open; chains carried. Coronet Peak: Packed powder; chains carried. Awakino: Base 40cm; skiing on main basins; some runs on glacier open; operating week-ends. Tasman Glacier and Methven Heliski: Dry powder; operating subject to weather.
