Cashing in on rabbits

Sir,—l agree with a Labour M.P., Mr Ken Shirley, that some sort of commercial hunting of wild rabbits is needed. I also go along with the suggestion that hunters could be rewarded. The Government did it with deer. My father used to hunt deer for their skins in the 1940 s and 1950 s and then, later, for meat. This was also done with opossums and hares. I believe that in the 1940 s rabbits were hunted and a reward of ammunition was given for the ears of the pest. If the Government would drop the law banning the sale of feral rabbits, and with the co-operation of land owners for access, hunters could

bring the epidemic down to an acceptable level. I believe pressure hunting does work. In the area in which I hunt rabbits I used to get 30 in a day easily. Now I would be lucky to get 10.—Yours, etc., GEORGE HEWISON. July 23, 1989.
