Charity tax rule likely to stay

and MICHAEL RENTOUL The Government looks likely to stick with the existing tax exemptions for charities against earlier indications that it would tax charities like any business. It is likely to strengthen existing provisions to prevent abuse of the system, which allows some companies to trade as charities, and escape taxation. The' Government had just received a report from a working party on the issue, which recommended keeping the existing regime, the Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill, said in the Budget. “The Government will consider this report sympathetically, and will release the report together with our response in the near future,” he said. Charities have welcomed the news that the Government is likely to stick with the existing tax exemptions.
