New Ministry to be set up

By

PAM MORTON

Two Government departments will be abolished and a new Ministry of Research, Science and Technology will s.et up. Legislation will be introduced soon which will merge the Lands Department with the Survey and Land Department and the Ministry of Energy with Ministry of Commerce. Both Lands and Energy remain important areas of Government interest, but in the Cabinet’s view no longer justify, separate administration. The new Ministry is expected to be set up by October 1 and will advise the Government on research policy. The Ministry will not directly undertake scientific research. The Government has also agreed to set up an independent Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, separate from the D.S.I.R.

From July, 1990, the Government has agreed to allocate 20 per cent of the Government research budget to the foundation. The funding will be increased 10 per cent every 12 months until it reaches 50 per cent of total available funds after three years. The foundation will be responsible for funding research, science and technology requirements, in accordance with national priorities set by the Government.
