Billet Doux big Cup threat

Auckland correspondent The Pukekohe mudlark, Billet Doux, promises to be a big threat in tomorrow’s $40,000 Taumarunui Gold Cup at Te Rapa before switching roles. After the Taumarunui Racing Club’s feature Billet Doux will be given a couple of hurdle starts to prepare him for a hurdling career next winter. The rising six-year-old has gained the first part of his hurdling ticket and will go for the second stage next Tuesday. His hurdles debut is set down for the Matamata meeting on August 10. But just because he is to be tried as a jumper doesn’t mean he has lost any of his ability on the flat. In fact three starts back he beat a handy field and he has followed that up with two sound runs at the Trentham meeting, his latest outing resulting in a fourth behind laceration in the Parliamentary Handicap. “The ground was a bit too puggy for him in the Parliamentary,” said his trainer Corrie Kerkvliet. “He would have preferred it looser.” Billet Doux, to be ridden as usual by David Johnson, is attempting his second Taumarunui Gold Cup, having finished a gallant third to Allez Pal and Gatcombe’s Pride in last year’s contest. Gatcombe’s Pride, that fine winter galloper from Feilding, is again among his rivals on Saturday and he must be a

leading chance. A brilliant winner at Wanganui four starts back, Gatcombe’s Pride followed up with a third in the Fay Richwhite Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie and two fifth placings, the latest being in the Parliamentary Handicap. He carried 58 kilograms in the Trentham 2200-metre event and he is handicapped on the same weight tomorrow. Escalation, from the Takanini stable of Frank Ritchie, is assured of plenty of support in the Taumarunui Gold Cup after his runaway win in last week-end’s Te Awamutu Cup. He revels in bad ground and has a good record over the 2100-metre distance — two starts for a win and a placing. Grey 80, in the twilight of her career, deserves some attention. She won the Fay Richwhite Cornwall handicap with a game display and was bogged down on the rails last time out at Trentham. Spanish Star, third to Escalation at Te Awamutu, is another which ran creditably in the Cornwall Handicap, finishing fourth. He comes in well tomorrow with 51kg on his back. King Aussie, on the verge of winning form, and Lunar Trail, a winner at Trentham recently, give Woodville trainer John Harris a strong hand in the field, while other chances are Tour Blade, Jimmy Te Cobai and Star Harvest.
