Southern Beau strong chance

Auckland correspondent Southern Beau, looks set to wrap up an incredible season for his owners with victory in the $20,000 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate at the Whangarei Racing Club’s meeting of Ruakaka today. The Beaufort Sea gelding is owned by Karaka Bloodstock, an Aucklandbased syndication company which has been represented by a steady stream of winners since it was established last September. Heading the list for Karaka Bloodstock is Corderon, winner of the Group One Swettenham Stud Sires’ Produce Stakes at Awapuni, while other notable performers have been French Lace (three wins), Soleil Rouge (two

wins), Striking and Hot Tempo (both winners). Southern Beau showed good form at trials before running sixth in his debut at Pukekohe, but on better going at Te Awamutu last Saturday he produced his best form with a superb victory. From the outside draw he went straight to the front and had no trouble winning. At Ruakaka today Southern Beau has drawn well at barrier three and with his pace he should be handy from the outset. Grand Fun, a Racing Is Fun filly in Peter Hollinshead and Richard Otto’s team, is on the verge of winning form and given rain-affected going must be a leading chance. Last time out Grand Fun fought gallantly for second at Ellerslie on

June 10. A freshen-up since then should see her ready for a bold showing. Danore Balle, from the Verner stable, is another which has been freshened since last racing. A Danzatore filly she won first-up and her last outing was back in February at Ellerslie when she finished eighth. She has the ability to bounce back to form and shuld be one to watch as a three-year-old. The Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes has attracted a good even linep-up with other chances being Sheriff, winner of his last two starts, Space Indian, Jay Star, Single Edition, Baronet, Mighty McGinty and Lord Relic. The latter has yet to win, but has gone eyecatching races.
