No let-up for police in search for Swedes

PA Hamilton The police say the jailing yesterday of a man charged with taking the car of the missing Swedish tourists, Sven Urban Hoglan and Heidi Paakonen, will have no effect on the inquiry into the couple’s disappearance. David Wayne Tamihere, also known as Pat Kelly, appeared in the District Court in Thames yesterday charged with unlawfully taking the missing couple’s white Subaru station waggon and theft of property including two backpacks, a fishing rod,

a wet-weather suit and two pairs of binoculars. He admitted the charges and was sentenced to a total of two years prison, cumulative on a prison term he is already serving. The police information officer, Senior-Sergeant Graham Bell, said Tamihere’s appearance in court did not have any effect on the inquiry and the police would proceed on the same lines as they had done. Senior-Sergeant Bell said there were no plans to reduce the numbers of

detectives working on. the case. The 28 detectives working on the case had been very busy since Tamihere’s photograph was made public. Interpol was still contacting people in Canada, Switzerland, Sweden and Britain. One detective on the inquiry was in constant touch with the missing couple’s families, who had accepted that the pair were dead, said SeniorSergeant Bell.

Police morale was still good, in spite of the heavy workload, he said.
