Jack Frost bites hard

By

NEIL CLARKSON

Christchurch residents weathered their heaviest frost this winter yesterday, with a 9deg. reading at Christchurch Airport. The Botanic Gardens fared slightly better, with an Bdeg. frost. The 9deg. reading was just o.4deg. below the heaviest July frost at the airport, in 1980, but was well away from the July record for the Botanic Gardens —12.1 deg. in 1868.

The heaviest frost recorded in Christchurch was 12.9 deg., measured at the Botanic Gardens in August, 1868. Christchurch consumers have had their water heating turned off by Southpower for an average of two hours each morning this week to reduce peak demand.

A 6deg. frost was predicted for today after a minimum overnight air temperature of about -2deg. The minimum overnight air temperatures on Tuesday were -sdeg. at the airport and -4deg. at the gardens.
