Top prize for book on Ashton-Warner
PA Wellington Lynley Hood walked away with New Zealand’s coveted literary prize when her biography, “Sylvia,” was proclaimed Book of the Year at the 1989 Goodman Fielder Wattie Book Award ceremony last evening. A cheque for $17,000 was presented to the Dunedin-based writer by the executive chairman of Goodman Fielder Wattie (N.Z.), Ltd, Mr Don Budden, at a function in Auckland’s Regent Hotel. “Sylvia,” published by Penguin, traces the life and work of one of the
educational innovators of this century, Sylvia Ash-ton-Warner. Second prize of $BOOO was awarded to Michael Cooper for “The Wines and Vineyards of New Zealand/’ published by Hodder and Stoughton.
The journalist, Sandra Coney, took third prize of $4OOO for “The Unfortunate Experiment,” published by Penguin.
The judges, Irihapeti Ramsden, Graham Beattie and Pene Walsh, selected the three winners from a short list of 10 culled from 79 entries.
