Inflation rates compared
PA Wellington New Zealand’s inflation rate is well below that of its main trading partners, according to latest figures given in Parliament yesterday by the Minister of Finance, Mr Caygill. He told the House figures from Australia showed a June quarter increase in the consumers’ price index of 2.4 per cent twice the rate of increase in New Zealand. The annual rate of increase in Australia was 7.6 per cent for the year ended June compared with 4.4 per cent in New Zealand.
The 4.4 per cent figure was also below the rate of inflation in the United States, which was 5.2 per cent and in Britain, which was 8.3 per cent for the year ended May, he said.
