Minister precludes action on sale

Political reporter

No action will be taken against officials who withheld information which allowed the illegal sale of the Liquid Fuels Trust Board to go ahead in 1986, the Minister of Energy, Mr Butcher, told Parliament yesterday. The Auditor-General, Mr Brian Tyler, revealed this week that the trust board sold its assets despite a legal opinion which said this was illegal.

The opinion was held from the then Ministers of Finance and Energy, Messrs Douglas and Tizard. , Mr Butcher said that since the transaction had

taken place two years ago, there was no direct action which could be taken.

He confirmed also that the board’s last two annual reports were still outstanding, and that the Audit Office was still vetting them before release.
