Amalgamation challenged

PA Wellington The Wallace County Council’s challenge against being amalgamated into a larger Southland region will be heard in the Court of Appeal. At the High Court in Wellington on Monday, Mr Justice Jeffries made an order removing the case .to the Court of Appeal for

hearing on August 1 and 2. On those dates, the court will also hear an appeal from Devonport Borough Council about its objections to being amalgamated into a single North Shore City. In Auckland on Friday, Mr Justice Robertson rejected the Devonport council’s case against amalgamation.

Mr Justice Jeffries was due to hear the Wallace County appeal against a Local Government Commission reorganisation of local bodies that would see Wallace County incorporated into a larger Southland region.

But the Wallace County’s lawyer, Mr Royden Somerville, successfully sought removal to the Court of Appeal.
