Limbs’ great leap forward

The contemporary dance company, Limbs, are bringing their “Great Leap Forward” production to Christchurch on July 28 and 29.

The company has now overcome the financial problems that dogged it last year, and is presenting four new works by Australian and New Zealand choreographers.

Kai Tai Chan, a director and choreographer from Melbourne’s One Extra Dance Company, has used the music from Verdi’s opera, “Otello” to create a dance version of this classic tale. With the powerful use of images and metaphors the dance

offers new insights into some of the tensions experienced in today’s society.

“Kidnapped Too” by an expatriate New Zealander, Sue Healey, who is now based in Melbourne, is a highly physical, fluid exploration of movement with and against a person’s will.

“Off With Their Heads,” pictured above, is a funny new work from Mary-Jane O’Reilly, one of . New Zealand’s most respected choreographers, who has brought to life a witty slice of “Alice in Wonderland.” “Off With Their Heads” is set to an origi-

nal score by a New Zealand composer, Jonothon Besser.

Brian Carbee’s new piece, as yet untitled, uses J. S. Bach’s “Goldburgh variations” for harpsichord to create an exhilarating dance that deals with indecision and its effect on movement and energy. Cath Cardiff, the artistic director of Limbs, is excited to see the company back on the road again. “I’d be silly not to admit that there were times last year when I thought this country would never see Limbs tour again, but thankfully that was not the case,

due to the determination and generosity of the dancers, certain individuals, companies and of course our audience, who refused to let Limbs disappear. “In a' way the Great Leap Forward Tour is a celebration, not only for the company but for our audiences as well.” In addition to the performances at the James Hay Theatre at 8.15 p.m., the company will be giving lunchtime performances on July 25 at Lincoln College, and on July 27 at the University of Canterbury. Members will also be giving a workshop on July 29 at Dance Corporate.
