Tragedy of Dido

Virgil’s story about the wanderings of Aeneas and the foundation of Rome has provided the inspiration for Libby Watson’s play “The Tragedy of Dido,” to be performed next week at the Free Theatre. It tells the story of the encounter between Aeneas and Dido, Queen of Carthage. “It’s the story of a woman whose marriage has broken up through no fault of her own and she’s left to pick up the pieces,” says Watson, a classics student at Canterbury University. She describes Dido as a strong figure in the original story. “Readers often empathise with her rather than the ’hero’ Aeneas.” Watson is directing the play herself, with an allstudent cast. A composition student, Elisabeth Golding, wrote and performed the music for the play. “The Tragedy of Dido” will be performed at the Free Theatre on July 27 to 29 at 8 p.m.
