Clyde dam
Sir,—The “Holmes” programme of July 20' on TVI featured ongoing problems with the Clyde Dam project. There was little evidence of investigation. Why did the reporters not interview specialists and current workers on geological problems in the area — the New Zealand Geological Survey? Surely they
could invoke the Freedom of Information Act to pierce official restrictions that have been imposed on public communication from these specialists? The public should be better informed. Even Electricorp is incredibly misinformed (generous interpretation) if it thinks “overseas experts” will know more about New Zealand geological problems than the local geological specialists. New Zealand geologists have a high level of international recognition, particularly in dealing with earth deformation and slope stability, and even more particularly in their own country. — Yours, etc., D. W. LEWIS, Reader in Geology, University of Canterbury. July 21, 1989.
