Casinos

Sir,—Does Christchurch really need a casino? Does New Zealand? I think not. Only two states in the United States have them. Atlantic City has a casino and crime increased 171 per cent in three years. Nevada, after 50 years with casinos, has the highest criine rate in the United States. The Queensland Fitzgerald inquiry learnt that casino police took bribes. I believe our police are free of corruption; let us keep it that way. Most Australian states said no to casinos; New Zealand must say no, too. It cannot be said that casinos attract visitors. In Australia it has been noted that Victoria, without a casino, had a larger increase in visitors than Tasmania, next door. In north Australia, Townsville and Darwin have not had the anticipated hordes of Asians that were expected. Before it is too late, we should object to the setting up of casinos in New Zealand.—Yours, etc., R. L. VOLCKMAN. July 21, 1989.
