Amalgamation

Sir, —The “Local Government Reform” booklet distributed with rate demands is typical of the Government’s propaganda machine — trying to make an unpopular move more acceptable. The Opposition to forced amalgamation has been strong and widespread, yet the Government has not even endeavoured to consider the will of the people. The propaganda booklet points out how great the new system will be — but how will it be great, what is this system going to achieve that the present system is not? History has proven that the bigger an authority gets the less connected it is to the individual, and the less the individual wishes are considered, the more corruption there is, the more waste there is and the higher the cost will be. Nothing in the booklet shows how these problems are going to be handled. It is time this Government introduced referendums so that the wishes of the people form the principles by which we are governed. — Yours, etc., . F. BECKETT. July 21, 1989.
