A masked man armed with a sawn-off shotgun crossed through a Wellington schoolground yesterday while fleeing the scene of a bank robbery, the police say. Inspector John Kelly said the man hit one of the bank’s customers in the back with the butt of his gun befdre taking a “substantial” amount of money from the Riddiford Street branch of the Bank of New Zealand. The customer was not thought to be seriously injured. After leaving the bank the man walked through a schoolground in the Newtown suburb, where he presented the gun at a member of the public before running off. — PA
