Hockey run too late

p A Wellington New Zealand timed its run too late to down Canada at the junior women’s World Cup hockey tournament in Ottawa yesterday. It was New Zealand’s last chance to take points from pool play, but the Kiwis ran out of time and Canada held on for a 2-1 win. After an initial period of tentative play, the New Zealanders — led by Kylie Foy and Anna Lawrence — played more positively. But Canada fought back, broke the Kiwi defence and scored from the resulting penalty corner. Canada followed up well in the thirty-second minute to score again and lead 2-0 at the break. New Zealand came back strongly in the second spell, earning a number of penalty corners. The pressure finally told in the seventeenth. minute of the second half when Lawrence picked up a rebound off the Canadian keeper to score.
