Masur saves Australia

NZPA-AP Lima, Peru Australia has won a place in the Davis Cup finals after Wally Masur yesterday defeated Peruvian Pablo Arraya in the deciding fifth match to give the Australians a 3-2 winning margin. Masur was leading 6-4, 6-4, 4-6 on Monday, when judges suspended play until yesterday because of darkness, but took just 40min to win the final set

6-2. The quick victory dashed the hopes of the Peruvian squad to score an upset and advance to the finals for the first time. On Monday Peruvian Jaime Yzaga won a hard-fought five-set match against a cup debutant, Jason Stoltenberg, to give his country a chance at an upset victory. The 19-year-old Stoltenberg played in place of

veteran Darren Cahill, who aggravated an ankle injury suffered in practice last week. Arraya lost to Cahill and Masur lost to Yzaga in singles matches. Peru has never advanced past the elimination round in the Davis Cup. Australia has made the final rounds since it started playing in the Davis Cup in 1907, and has won the tournament 26 times.
