Trainer gets disqualification changed to fine on appeal

NZPA-AAP Perth A six-month disqualification imposed on the private racing trainer of a Perth millionaire, Dallas Dempster, has been changed to . a sAustl 0,000 fine on appeal. Trainer Lou Luciani appealed to the Western

Australian Turf Club (W.A.T.C.) committee after his disqualification by stewards inquiring into a doping charge. On July 7 Luciani was found guilty by stewards of racing the two-year-old colt, Amyquil, at Perth’s Belmont Park, after which tests revealed

traces of the prohibited tranquiliser Acetylpromazine. A positive swab was returned after Amyquil won the Qantas Frequent Flyers Handicap on June 10. The W.A.T.C. Chairman of stipendiary stewards,

Wayne Wood, said the sixmonth disqualification was relatively lenient because the prohibited substance found was a tranquiliser, and not a stimulant.

Acetylpromazine — also known as “Ace” — acted to calm nervous or highlystrung horses, he said.
