Aust eases ahead of CPI

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed slightly lower in Sydney yesterday on mixed trade ahead of today’s release of the June quarter Consumer Price Index figures. “Apart from some very mild profit-taking and options related trading, it was really very quiet,” one broker said. The all-ordinaries index closed 1.1 points lower at 1606.5. Price rises slightly led falls on turnover of 91.71 million shares worth sAustl67.6o million. Lend Lease Corporation fell 40c to 1100 on low turnover as profit takers moved on the stock. The market leader, BHP, fell 6c to 958, mainly as a result of options-related trading. The all-industrials index was 0.1 points higher at 2575.1, while the all-re-sources index fell 1.9 points to 873.8. The gold marker was up 0.7 points at 1581.7. Howard Smith jumped 15c to 500. BTR Nylex gained 6c to 526, Goodman Fielder and FAI both gained 5c to 225 and 280 respectively. Westfield Capital gained 3c to 47c. Arnotts fell 10c to 630, Amcor lost 9c to 428, Email 5c to 420, and Elders 2c to 297 on turnover of 2.48 million shares. Brokers said the main seller of Elders was BZW Meares. The Coles Myer lost 6c to 840 and David Jones lost 5c to 1045. Transport stocks were mostly weaker. Brambles lost 5c to 1430 and TNT 4c to 346. Mayne Nickless was steady at 600. Among the entrepreneurs, Adelaide Steamship lifted 4c to 710 and Brierley Investments and Bond Corporation each rose 3c to 147 and 90c respectively. Bank stocks were mostly weaker. The ANZ fell 8c to 500 and Westpac 6c to 506. National Australia gained 6c to 614 and Advance Bank was up 5c to 490 after posting a full year net profit of sAust26.o2M.
