Trout farming

Sir,—When commenting on Mike Moore’s statement about trout farming (July 18), I had not heard his reference to “war chests.” Mr Moore seems as illinformed on acclimatisation societies as on trout farming. The Minister of Conservation approves all licence fees, ensuring that society income only meets current expenditure. There is no “war chest.” Mr Moore’s “strict controls” might reassure if the Government had not approved landing marron and channel catfish in New Zealand without checking them for disease and parasites. The Government’s abysmal record in enforcing quarantine controls, and honouring agreements (as during establishment of salmon farming), only confirms our fears. Neither the D.O.C. in Taupo, nor societies elsewhere, nor MAFFish at sea can control poaching now, and the perfect excuse, “it’s farmed trout,” would make it impossible in future.—Yours, etc.,

W. C. CLARK. July 19,1989.
