Voluntary unionism

Sir,—Like A. Trotter (July 19) I read the “New Zealand Herald’s” poll on compulsory unionism. From the 2000 people polled some (the percentage was omitted) were aged as young as 16 and, as minors, are not required to join a union until voting age. Also polled were people not in paid work and professionals.

Those not in paid work (like the minors) would probably have very little experience of the subject on which to base their opinions, and the professionals (more used to fat salaries than familiar with wage slavery) may not feel the need for union protection. The poll itself was not necessary as every member of a union has the opportunity to vote by secret ballot on this issue every three years. The results (obtainable from union executives) may show the “New Zealand Herald” just how misleading its polls could be.—Yours, etc.,

S. HALL. July 19 1989.
