Walt of death

Sir, —Varian Wilson (July 15) obviously has no concept of the destruction of marine life caused by Japanese and Taiwanese drift-nets in the South Pacific. He infers that American tuna boats, if fitted with bow-cutters to slice through drift-nets, are acting as "pirates.” The only “pirates,” however, are the Japanese and Taiwanese drift-netting fleets that threaten the destruction of the entire albacore industry in a few years if allowed to continue. Fishing, as big business, should operate efficiently, but “efficiently” implies using techniques that ensure a sustainable yield. If drift-netting continues, fish stocks will be destroyed, nontarget species decimated, and the economies of many island nations ruined. Efficient is hardly a word to describe this practice; abhorrent, callous and irresponsible better describe the actions of Japan and Taiwan. — Yours, etc., ALASTAIR SUREN. July 17, 1989.
