Improvements suggested for by-pass road
Improved street lighting, road marking and sign-posting are among short-term improvements suggested for the acci-dent-plagued Johns RoadRussley Road by-pass. The suggestions were made at an informal meeting yesterday of representatives of the Automobile Association, the Ministry of Transport and the Waimairi District Council. The association’s traffic and safety manager, Mr John Strachan,, said the meeting would undoubtedly lead to a better understanding of the traffic situation by all parties as they worked to improve safety on the route. The meeting was called by the association last
month only a day before two sisters were seriously injured on the by-pass as they walked to school. Ministry of Transport figures show that six people were killed on the 12.1 km by-pass between Yaldhurst Road and Belfast from January, 1983, to December, 1988. Forty-two people were seriously hurt and 126 suffered minor injuries. The figures exclude the death of an elderly woman in a crash at the corner of Johns Road and Harewood Road on February 18 and the accident involving the two sisters in late June. Yesterday’s meeting concentrated on improving safety along the whole length of the road rather than at individual accident sites.
