Officers’ assault lands man in court
A man, aged 22, will face assault charges today after attacking two traffic officers in Aranui last evening. A Ministry of Transport spokeswoman said the officers chased the man to a Mattingley Street house after becoming suspicious about his driving. The man tried to run off into a party and became violent after the officers spoke to him. He was arrested about 9.40 p.m. The spokeswoman said the man was required to give a blood sample for excess alcohol and further charges could be made. Neither officer was seriously injured in the fracas. Two neighbours who made emergency 111 calls to the police after witnessing the assault deserved praise, the spokeswoman said. A patrol car sent to the incident was not required.
