Hotel replacement

Sir, —Stan Darling quotes Sir Miles Warren as stating that the new tall buildings around Cathedral Square are "now generally recognised as necessary to contain the Square.” What a pity that the neo-Gothic Victorian pile in the centre so detracts from our new, trendy, corporate image. Christchurch was originally conceived as a Cathedral city and for 100 years the cityscape was dominated by the Cathedral and its spire. But now, it is dominated by the Robert Jones Tower and the Clarendon Tower. Perhaps it is time to recognise that cathedral cities are, in this age, an irrelevancy and the Cathedral should be demolished and replaced by an excitingly designed commercial “shedifice” more fully reflecting our modem, sophisticated, lifestyle.—Yours, etc., ROBIN PAWSEY. July 13, 1989.
