Daring duck’s last chase
PA Nelson Donalda Duck has died, doing what she loved best — chasing cars on the Golden Bay highway near Nelson.
Donalda was found at lunchtime yesterday on the road at the base of the Takaka Hill.
She was rapidly becoming famous for her aerobatics performed around cars, startling drivers by appearing at their windows and cruising alongside at speeds up to 80km/h. The duck lived at the Jacobsen family’s Upper Takaka deer farm for 10 months, after she was found abandoned two days old, although the family said she was not strictly a pet. She was taught to fly and was fed by the Jacobsen children, Karen, aged 15, and Matthew, aged 12. Soon she was chasing the farm bike. Mrs Christine Jacobsen said they used to be able to pick Donalda up but later she began to keep her distance, except from passing cars.
