Police praise brave woman

PA Dunedin The police have praised a Dunedin woman, aged 79, who barricaded ’herself in her bedroom on Sunday night after being confronted by an intruder with a knife. The woman was alone in her house in Cosy Dell Road, when she heard someone upstairs about 9.15 p.m., said Senior-Ser-geant Neville Blair, of the Dunedin Criminal Investigation Bureau, yesterday. When she went to investigate, a man came down the stairs holding a small knife. The man held the knife close to her neck but she told him she was not afraid. The intruder then ran into the kitchen and wrenched the telephone from the wall. She ran into her bedroom, barricaded the door with a broomstick and rang the police from the bedroom extension. The woman was distressed but unhurt. An initial search for the man using a police dog was unsuccessful.
