Club’s election results delayed

By

JEFF SCOTT

Members of the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club have been kept in suspense over the election of stewards for the new season. The incumbent president of the club, Peter Andrews, advised members at last night’s annual general meeting there would be a half-hour delay with the results due to the large number of votes. Fifty minutes into the meeting, a message was forwarded from the scrutineers working at the Raceway Office that an announcement of the results would be delayed until noon today. Closing time for the ballot papers being returned was at noon yesterday. Fifteen stewards are seeking election including

Stephanie Crofts, the first woman to seek such a position with the club. Tony Abell was elected vice-president of the club, unopposed. The immediate pastpresident, Dan McCormick, and the retiring secretary-manager of Addington Raceway, Trevor Davis, were both awarded Life Membership badges. Mr McCormick became a member in 1959, a committeeman in 1967, a steward in 1973, the club’s vice-president in 1979 and president in 1984. He also served as a director of Addington Raceway in 1983 and 1984. “Dan’s contribution to the N.Z. Metropolitan Club and to harness racing has been enormous over the last 22 years, as an administrator,” said

Mr Andrews. “His pleasant and likeable personality has won him and this club a host of friends throughout Australia and New Zealand. His personal performance in leading us through the 1987 Inter-Dominions was quite outstanding,” said Mr Andrews. "Mr Davis, who retires in November, is one of only four secretary-mana-gers to have held this position in the last 90 years. He made the gradual progression to' secretarymanager in 1979 and has been associated with the club for 29 years. “During his period as secretary-manager developments at Addington Raceway have been of momentous proportions,” said Mr McCormick.
