Rich medal haul for canoeists

NZPA London New Zealand has plundered the medal bag with a series of outstanding performances at the Nottingham International canoeing regatta which ended on Sunday. In all the four-man team collected three gold medals, two silvers and one bronze

with a memorable sustained performance of high quality canoeing. The individual star was the Otaki paddler, John MacDonald, who finished the regatta with three gold medals in the KI 500 and 1000 m and the K2 500 m along with a silver in the K 4 500 m.

■ Although the leading European nations opted to send second-string teams to the regatta, there was still plenty of solid competition. It was an important meeting for Great Britain’s paddlers, with selection for the world championships in Bulgaria next month dependant

on performances in Nottingham. The New Zealanders fulfilled coach Mark Sutherland’s hopes of success, but, even Sutherland was surprised by the degree to which the Kiwis dominated the regatta.
