Squad changes puzzle Tamati
PA Wellington The Wellington rugby league coach and a former Kiwi, Howie Tamati, is puzzled with the changes made to the New Zealand team which lost the first test to Australia 26-6 on Sunday. “I can’t understand the need to drop Barry Harvey
(hooker) and call Gary Mercer (wing) into the team,” Tamati said. The Wellington captain, Harvey, was dropped in favour of Auckland’s Duanne Mann. “I am disappointed and Barry is absolutely dejected. “If you look at the video he made his tackles around the
legs and he brought down the big guys, Paul Sironen and Steve Roach, with hits at their ankles. “I can’t understand the reasoning behind saying Mann was being brought in to add more punch and to keep Sironen in check,” Tamati said.
The recall of Gary Mercer puzzled him the most. “I am confused about that. They seemed in almost a hurry to get him back. “He is just not fast enough and . it comes as a suprise after Dave Ewe was said to have only just missed out from the first test team,” Tamati said.
