Tourism

Sir,—ln recent years we have been arguing as to which of Canterbury’s attractions are most likely to attract visitors. Many of us have been riding personal hobby horses and making such arrogant comments as: “What visitors come to Canterbury to see is ... not ...” I suggest that we accept your editorial “Gondola lift for Christchurch” (June 30) as the referee’s decision on these debates. You said, inter alia: “The gondola is unlikely to bring to Christ-

church on its own account. However it will add to the diversity of attractions ..If Christchurch is to attract more visitors we must strive for “the three Ds of tourism” — diversity, diversity, diversity. I would like Christchurch to be divested of its rest stop reputation because of “sleepy hollow” overtones. A more rewarding image would be of an exciting tourist destination offering something for everyone. Tourists have diverse interests — including casinos, gondolas, towers and art galleries (new).— Yours, etc., J. K. MOIR. July 6, 1989.
