Our High Noon proving to be a bargain buy

Wayne Herbert wasn’t that impressed the day he got landed with an Ashabit colt at a sale for $3OOO but it would take a lot more than that now to prise the youngster, Our High Noon, from his Woodville stable.

Our High Noon was one of the most impressive winners at Trentham on Saturday leading virtually all the way in the Mornington Handicap, in the hands of Phillip Mercer, to earn a probable start in the Winter Cup at Riccarton on August 12. Herbert trains Our High Noon and races him ' in partnership with Ken and Flo McDonald and Neil

Skori, the last named also sharing in the ownership of the .useful Tumac which was placed at the Counties meeting on Saturday. Our High ' Noon was consigned to the sales as a yearling and Herbert put in a bid more out of friendship for the vendor, Jack Mangin, than for any liking for the horse. That bid turned out to be the last one however and Our High Noon, winner of four races from thirteen starts, has proved a bargain.

His dam, Dark Moon, is a half-sister to New Moon, one of the most brilliant speedsters produced in New Zealand in recent

times. Her eight wins here produced four track records and when sold to the United States she won at Santa Anita before becoming the dam of the Oaks placed performer, Foggy Morn, there. Our High Noon is highly strung but game “I really believe he is a firm-track horse and he’s really only racing now because he seems to be able to handle anything,” said Herbert. Still in need of a win to be sure of a Winter Cup start, Our High Noon is headed for Hawera where a 0-5 wins, set-weight, 1600-metre event on July 19 looks made to order.
