B’ville repair to begin
NZPA-AAPKieta, Bougainville The Papua New Guinea Government says it hopes repair work could begin next week and that the Bougainville Copper mine will reopen within a month. The Minister for State, Mr Ted Diro, said the No. 1 priority for the 500-strong police and troops currently on the island was to provide sufficient security to allow the mine to resume production.
“It’s crucial we get the mine working as soon as possible,” he said. Company officials said it would take three or four weeks to repair four power pylons sabotaged by secessionist militants, but that work would not begin until the safety of repair teams could be guaranteed. The Bougainville Copper mine, which has been shut for seven weeks, provides about 20 per cent of direct Government revenue.
The Prime Minister, Mr Rabbie Namaliu, has warned that social and economic dislocation is inevitable as a result of spending cuts forced on the Government by the mine’s closure.
The Government, which holds 19.1 per cent of BCL, earned a total of sAustl.4O billion in taxes and dividends from Bougainville. CRA, Ltd, holds a 54 per cent stake in Bougainville.
