JET SPRINTING The ever-consistent Rodney Pohio showed that the autumn months have not dulled his sharp jet sprinting skills at the week-end. when he won the open A class sprint on the Waimakariri River. Pohio had little difficulty on the fast course, which was designed to test driver skills, rather than boat skills. River conditions were excellent for the Sunday event which was the first round of the six-series Canterbury championships. Eighty three entries took to the course and the only major disaster was when Eddie Pratley rolled his 400 cu in Chevrolet powered Makraft hull when he hit a bank sideways. Although his roll cage was destroyed there were no serious injuries. The second round of the series will be held on the Ashley River on July 23. results.— Open A class: R. Pohio 1, K. Scott 2, J. RUGBY A Canterbury player, Peter de Goldi, has been chosen to captain the New Zealand Universities’ rugby league team, which will defend its World Cup title in August. Five Canterbury and one Lincoln player have been named in the touring party of 26 to go to Britain. The team will be guided by former Kiwi coach, Ces Mountford, who says his biggest worry is the lack of experience in the team. But Mountford is hopeful his team can retain the title it won in the five-team competition three years ago. Eight teams will contest this year’s universities World Cup in Britain. New Zealand’s programme is:— August 1: France at Leigh. August 4: Wales at Oldham. August 7: Holland at Halifax. The semi-finals are scheduled for Doncaster and Swinton on August 11 and the final will be at Wigan on August 12. The 26 players, who leave New Zealand on July 22, are: Mike Prouting (Otago), Andrew Shaw (Massey), Hamish Commons (Otago), Neil Speedy (Massey), Brett McCracken (Auckland), Eric Ripley (Otago), Paul Bergman (Canterbury), Mike McLennan (Canterbury), August Williams (Otago), Paul Sowerby (Massey), Viny Weir (Waikato), Murray Hemi (Canterbury), Phil Bergman (Canterbury), James Monaghan (Auckland), Peter Reinsfield (Waikato), Ray Fitiao (Otago), Peter de Goldi (Canterbury, captain), Ray Stanley (Otago), Scott Barry (Massey), Glen Boyd (Otago), Jeremy Holmes (Victoria), Brett Yorke (Waikato), Arvi Crossland (Lincoln), Adam Cook (Waikato), Andrew Chalmers (Massey), Manu Fotu (Otago).
